Position: After-School Program Assistant
Location: 4100 Martin St, Detroit, MI
Salary Range: $15 - $20 per hour (based on qualifications)
Working Hours: 3-5 days a week between 2:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Job Description:


At Southwest STEM Labs, we believe every child deserves to feel happy, safe, and inspired to grow smarter each day. As an After-School Assistant, you will help create that environment by guiding students through hands-on STEM activities that spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage teamwork.

Southwest STEM Labs is seeking an enthusiastic After-School Program Assistant to support our 3rd-5th grade STEM program. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with children, has a passion for hands-on learning, and wants to make a positive impact in the Detroit community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support STEM instructors during after-school sessions (classroom setup, activity assistance, student supervision).
  • Engage with students in a safe, encouraging, and professional manner.
  • Help with group projects such as environmental science, coding, robotics, and creative STEM challenges.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Ensure students are picked up safely at the end of the day.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 60 college credits or equivalent in education, social work, or a STEM field.
  • Availability to work between 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM, 3-5 days a week.
  • Experience working with elementary-age children (formal or informal).
  • Interest in STEM, education, or youth mentorship.
  • Dependable, patient, and professional.
  • Able to follow program policies and support lead instructors.
  • Background check required before starting.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) are a plus but not required.
